Are the water bottles in my hotel room free?

Usually, at a luxury hotel: 85% of those we've checked leave free bottled water in the room. Four signs tell you which bottles are free.

  • Look for a label. Free bottles usually carry a tag, a neck label or a card saying "complimentary". A price card next to the bottle means it isn't.
  • Look at where it sits. Bottles on the desk, the nightstand or by the basin are usually the free ones. Bottles in the minibar or on the minibar tray are usually charged, even when they look the same.
  • Filtered water counts. Many hotels now swap plastic for filtered water in glass bottles, a carafe, or a refill station in the corridor or gym. That's free too.
  • When in doubt, ask at check-in: "Is the water in the room complimentary, and can I have more?" Ten seconds, and no surprise on the bill.

Do hotels charge for bottled water?

Some do. 47 hotels on our list charge for room water outright, and 79 give a fixed allowance and charge for the rest. We call those Two-Bottle Teases. The best-known case is the Ritz Paris: guests report one bottle per person AM, two small bottles PM, with extra bottles at €18 each (last checked Sep 2026).

Is the minibar free? Watch out for sensor minibars

Usually not: minibar drinks are normally charged, unless the hotel says the minibar is complimentary. Do minibars have sensors? Some do. They charge automatically when you lift an item, even if you put it back. If the minibar has a warning sign, or items sit in tight, fixed slots, ask before you move anything, and check your bill before you check out.

Is the water free by the pool?

The pool is where "free" most often stops. Guests report being charged or rationed at the pool at 39 hotels we've checked. Recent pool prices: $18 at Goldwynn Resort & Residences, €12 at Il Borro and €10 at Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay.

Does paying more get you free water?

Not reliably. 52% of the hotels where water is free are in our two top price bands ($$$ or $$$$), against 43% of the hotels guests flag for paying or rationing. If anything, the hotels with complaints are a little cheaper, but plenty of $$$$ hotels are on the Bottle Board too.

How do you get free water at a hotel?

Ask. At check-in, ask whether the water in the room is complimentary and whether you can have more. If you're charged anyway:

  • Ask the front desk to take it off, especially if nobody told you the water wasn't free. It's worth asking.
  • Check your bill at check-out for bottles you didn't drink, above all with a sensor minibar.
  • Tell the next guest: report what you paid. A photo of the price card or the bill counts most.

How we checked

We check 3,137 luxury hotels from Mr & Mrs Smith, Relais & Châteaux, Four Seasons, Aman, Rosewood, Belmond, Auberge and France's Palaces. For each we read guest reviews that mention water (Google, Tripadvisor, Reddit), hotel notes and listings, the hotel's own site and minibar menus. A hotel is free when listings or guests say so and nobody has complained in the last 24 months; a complaint needs a dated guest report, the hotel's own word or a priced menu. Restaurant water doesn't count.
